General FAQ's

Who can receive services at CCS?

CCS services are available to OSU students enrolled on a part-time or full-time basis or those who are covered by OSU Student Health Insurance.

How much does it cost?

All enrolled students are eligible for 10 free counseling sessions per academic year. (Sept 1-Aug 31).
If you have the Comprehensive Student Health Insurance (CSHI) you may be eligible for additional counseling sessions with a co-pay. At this time the co-pay is $15.00 per additional session. If you do not have CSHI and need additional counseling, we will do our best to assist you in finding services in the Columbus Community.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept BUCK-ID, money orders, or personal checks. There is a CVS located on Neil Avenue directly next to the Younkin Success Center. Money Orders may be purchased there for a small fee. Co-payments are due on the date of service.

How do I schedule an appointment?

To schedule an appointment, contact us at: 614-292-5766.

What happens at the initial appointment?

Initially you will meet with a counselor for an intake appointment. The counselor will collect some preliminary information about you and your concerns. You and the counselor will decide on a way to address your concerns. This may involve individual, couples or group counseling; referral to a physician; or, perhaps, referral to a clinician outside the agency.

If you are referred for individual counseling with a CCS counselor, you will be contacted with an appointment time and date. This counselor, who will be your ongoing counselor, may or may not be the same person you saw on intake. Within your first couple of sessions, you and your counselor will determine the type and amount of counseling that will best assist you.

Can I have an intake in the evening if I work all day?

Intake hours are from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. We do have office hours in the evening, but the initial session will need to be made during those hours.

How many sessions does it usually take?

On average, most students resolve their concerns between five and seven sessions. Sessions are generally 50 minutes in length, but this may vary session to session.

How long is the wait?

At times, because of demand for CCS services or student limited availability to make an appointment, there may be a wait for counselor assignment. We realize that it is often difficult for students to seek out counseling services, and having to wait can be frustrating. Please know that we make every effort to accommodate as many students as we can with a minimal wait. When there is a wait for services we will provide you with other counseling resources on and off campus.

What certifications do your counselors have?

Our staff includes 21 senior staff (12 psychologists, 3 psychiatrists, 3 counselors, and 3 social workers), 1 part-time dietician, 7 post-internship Master's or Ph.D.-level clinical fellows, 5 Ph.D.-level psychology interns, 2 Master's-level social work interns, 2 Master's-level clinical counseling interns, 1 psychiatric fellow, 1-5 practicum students, and 8 support staff. We also usually have adjunct clinical staff who help us provide some evening services. Our diverse staff specializes in a number of issues, including (but not limited to) substance abuse, eating disorders, sexual assault, relationship violence, international student concerns, LGBTQIA issues, and multiculturalism. What languages do CCS therapists speak fluently?

Due to the wonderful diversity of  the Counseling & Consultation Service staff, we offer therapy in the following languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Japanese, Hmong, Korean, and Hindi

Can I use alternate Health Insurance for your services?

We do not take any other form of Health Insurance. If you have another provider, you should take the time to learn about your health insurance benefits. Most Health Insurance providers have their own websites and/or toll-free numbers.

Do you have walk-in hours?

We do not have set walk-in hours. If you feel you need to be seen immediately, try to call our office ahead of time. We do have hours set aside for urgent situations. If you do walk-in, you may be asked to wait until someone becomes available to speak with you.

How private is my information?

The information you provide to us is kept in our office. We comply with HIPAA guidelines (The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule). You are asked to read through these guidelines prior to your first session. The information you provide on paper and during your sessions is not shared with any other office or agency unless you have signed a “Release of Information” form allowing your information to be shared with an outside agency or individual.

What if I can’t wait to talk to someone?

If you call to make an initial appointment (intake) and do not feel as if you can wait to be seen, we do have urgent appointment hours. The reception desk does not schedule these appointments. Your call will be transferred to a counselor. If a counselor is not available, the reception desk will take a message and someone will return your call.

Where can I park?

There are metered spots along the street in front of the Younkin Success Center at 1640 Neil Avenue. However, the meters are limited to 1 hour in length, so it may be wise to consider other modes of transportation such as bus, bike, or walking.
