My approach to counseling is an integration of psychodynamic and humanistic/existential therapies. These therapeutic models emphasize depth in personal life and relationships and the construction of meaning and purpose in life. I also incorporate mindfulness-based strategies to assist individuals to improve their coping skills, reduce stress, and increase their sense of connectedness.
In supervision, I integrate developmental and interpersonal models while being mindful of contextual dynamics (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, spirituality, agency, university, culture). I seek to assist my supervisees in identifying their training goals and how they can use their strengths, and the resources available during their training experience, to achieve them. I am also mindful that personal and professional growth is often intertwined and I invite my supervisees to consider how this may occur in their lives.
My professional and research interests include the intersection of culture, spirituality, and psychosocial adjustment, including the process of grief and loss, and the training and supervision of counselors.
Groups and Liaison Roles:
I serve as an embedded psychologist at the Moritz College of Law and as a liaison with the Latinx community on campus. I'm fully bilingual (English, Spanish) and provide clinical and outreach/educational services in both languages. I also lead a psychotherapy group for doctoral students (ABD).
I earned a doctorate (PhD) in Counseling Psychology at Andrews University and completed a doctoral internship in professional psychology at The Ohio State University Counseling and Consultation Service. I received a bachelor's degree in Theology from Universidad Adventista de las Antillas (Puerto Rico). I am a licensed psychologist (LP) and a licensed professional clinical counselor with training supervision designation (LPCC-S) in Ohio.
In my free time, I enjoy being with my family, savoring good food in great company, landscape photography, and playing the djembe. I also love visiting family and friends in my native Puerto Rico.
