Counseling and Consultation Service

Orientation

Welcome to The Ohio State University!

The transition to college is a big one and can come with a lot of changes. Change, even when positive, can produce stress. There is no right or wrong way to feel during this transition, and feelings of excitement, uncertainty, sadness, loneliness, worry and homesickness are all common. Because of this, it’s important to know about the many resources on campus that can support you as you adjust to life as a college student.

At Counseling and Consultation Service (CCS), part of our mission is to promote the well-being and academic success of students through access to diverse mental health services and outreach.

One of the most important things that students can do for their mental health is to be proactive about their physical and mental well-being. Wellness is an active process and it is a process that is ongoing. Anticipating and planning for change and challenges, rather than avoiding them, can build and increase resilience.

CCS offers a number of services that may be helpful as you make the transition to college. Here are a few that we would like to highlight:

  1. “Let’s Talk” Consultations
The “Let’s Talk” program provides drop-in, informal mental health consultations on a first-come, first served basis. This service is FREE and CONFIDENTIAL.

  2. Drop-In Workshops
Workshops cover a variety of topics, like “Beating Anxiety’ and ‘Surviving College 101’ that can provide helpful tools as you make the transition to college. Please see our website for times, locations and offerings.

  3. Emotional Fitness Blog
One of our staff psychiatrists, R. Ryan Patel, D.O., FAPA, writes on happiness, success and brain health for college and beyond, including practical ideas from emerging evidence.
  4. Ohio State: Wellness App
A new tool to support student mental health and well-being on campus with help to find resources, set goals, build healthy habits and connect to support on campus.

  5. Phone Screenings
It can be challenging to navigate resources on a large campus. If you are not sure what you need, consider scheduling a phone screening. This 10-15 minute phone appointment with one of our clinicians can help you find the services best for your needs, either with us or with one of our partner offices, on or off campus.

Again, welcome to Ohio State! As you enter this new phase of your life, know that CCS is here to support you.
