Psychiatry Rotation

Welcome to the Psychiatry Rotation at CCS! As you consider your educational goals for your residency and fellowship training, you have many ways to use your elective time. The Psychiatry rotation at CCS allows residents to build autonomy as an outpatient provider to Ohio State students. Our trainees treat a wide variety of patient presentations while receiving supervision from our psychiatry team, among our large and diverse staff.

The Ohio State University Counseling and Consultation Service provides Psychiatry Residents and fellows with the opportunity for an outpatient experience focused on the mental health of university students.

Positions are available for residents and fellows from the Ohio State University Department of Psychiatry. The structure, timing and scheduling of the rotation is flexible with consideration given to the resident’s training goals and schedule, as well as the supervisor’s availability. Prior examples have included 4 hrs per week for the academic year and 10-15 hrs per week for 3 months. At this time, approximately 60% is devoted to direct patient care, 20% to a variety of training opportunities (including 60 to 90 minutes per week of individual supervision from Senior Staff Psychiatrists) and 20% to various case management functions.

The major emphasis of this rotation is providing psychiatry services to the college population. This experience involves working in a multidisciplinary setting, with treatment of specific diagnoses common in this population. An emphasis is placed on multiculturalism, diversity and developmental issues in emerging adults. Residents may also meet individually with Senior Staff Psychologists, Social Workers, and Counselors to discuss particular areas of interest such as gender and sexuality, substance use disorders, identity issues, trauma or eating disorders.

Interested Residents and fellows are selected by the Training Director in The Ohio State University Department of Psychiatry and meet with a member of the psychiatry team at the Counseling and Consultation Service for an interview at least four to six weeks prior to beginning the rotation.
