Biofeedback Training

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is an evidence-based strategy used to lower your stress by focusing on breathing and relaxation while receiving real time data such as variable heart rate. While engaging with biofeedback, you wear a finger or ear clip that will provide information about your body.

How does Biofeedback work to decrease stress?

When you experience stress, your body reacts. Heart rate can increase, breathing changes and muscles may tighten. By making intentional changes, such as taking diaphragmatic breaths or relaxing muscles, you can reverse the immediate effects of stress. Your heart rate and breathing become more regulated which results in a more focused and relaxed state. Biofeedback training provides skills to control stress with in-the-moment data. Over time, this strategy can improve health and make day to day tasks easier. As a student at Ohio State, it is expected that you will face challenges as you grow, develop and move towards your academic and personal goals. It is also expected you will experience stress during your time as a student. Biofeedback is an effective way to reduce stress.

Interested in learning if Biofeedback is right for you?

If you are interested in Biofeedback training with Counseling and Consultation Service, the first step is to sign up for a phone screening so that we may discuss your needs and connect you with a clinician who will meet with you and establish plan for Biofeedback. During this screening, express your interest to use Biofeedback. After meeting with a clinician, you will learn about how you can drop in for self-guided follow up sessions.

Alive Biofeedback

If you require an accommodation such as side by side assisted use of Biofeedback to participate in this service, please contact Harry Warner at warner.221@osu.edu or 614-292-5766. Requests made one week in advance of the use will generally allow us to provide seamless access, but the university will make every effort to meet requests made after this date.
