Assessment

Psychological assessment (sometimes called testing) is a process that can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself through the use of psychological tests. Psychological assessment can help answer questions like:

  • Why is it so hard to concentrate?
  • Do I have problems with my memory?
  • Am I in the right major?
  • Why am I struggling in certain classes?

In addition to answering questions you have for yourself, psychological assessment can help answer questions posed by your individual Counseling and Consultation Service (CCS) therapist or CCS psychiatrist to help guide your treatment. CCS offers the following categories of psychological assessment:

  • Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Career (fee of up to $28.50)
  • Learning Disorder (LD)
  • Personality
  • Mandatory Assessments for alcohol and other substance use (fee of $50)

Who is eligible?

Students who are currently receiving individual therapy services at CCS are eligible for psychological assessment. You and your individual CCS therapist and/or CCS psychiatrist will determine whether a referral for psychological assessment is indicated. CCS is able to offer psychological assessment appointments each academic year on a varying, but limited, basis. Mandatory assessments require a referral from Student Conduct or Ohio State Athletics.

What can I expect?

After your CCS therapist and/or CCS psychiatrist makes a referral for assessment, the Assessment Committee will review the referral and determine if the referral can be accommodated at CCS. If so, you can expect to attend several appointments over several weeks which will include a thorough interview, screening questionnaires and a battery of comprehensive tests. You may be required to attend some of these appointments in person.  You can expect to discuss the results and receive feedback from your examiner 4-6 weeks after the last attended appointment.

For those who are needing a mandatory alcohol and/or drug assessment, CCS does offer a 2-session mandatory assessment with one of our trained therapists. This assessment consists of two 90-minute sessions, which includes a thorough diagnostic interview, history and battery of substance abuse assessments. At the end of the two sessions, a recommendation will be made about the appropriateness of ongoing individual or group treatment at CCS or at another agency in the community.

How much does it cost?

Most testing is free. Career Assessment costs up to $28.50. CCS does not bill insurance companies for fees associated with psychological assessment and payment is expected at the time of the assessment appointment.

The fee for a mandatory assessment is $50. The fee is due either in full before the first session or in payments of $25 before each of the 2 appointments.

Payment is accepted in the form of check, money order or BuckID
