Things you might have heard from well-meaning friends, family and acquaintances that have prevented you from going to counseling:
- "That is so not cool"
- "Get over it already"
- "Don't tell everybody all your business..."
Things you might have told yourself that have prevented you from going to counseling:
- "Everybody's gonna think I'm crazy"
- "Everybody's gonna find out"
- "I can handle it on my own"
- "My problems aren't as bad as someone else's"
- "It's just a waste of time"
There are STRONG common misperceptions about counseling that everyone has either seen on television or in the movies. Just as common are the cultural messages about counseling that stigmatize mental health care. Some students are able to get past negative messages about counseling. However others struggle and therefore may postpone receiving the help they may have needed to overcome some obstacle in their lives. Our goal is to provide important education and information to families, OSU faculty and staff, student organizations, and to the OSU community as a whole. Information, which helps all of us get past the stigma of mental health care, is of the utmost importance.
